Walnut blasting intake valves on a direct injection engine

Walnut Blasting

Walnut blasting removes carbon build up from intake ports and intake valves on petrol direct injection and diesel engines. It restores airflow and helps your engine run more efficiently.

Carbon build up is a known issue on direct injection engines and cannot be resolved with fuel additives or intake cleaning services. If you would like a more detailed explanation of the process and why it is effective, you can read our guide on what walnut blasting involves .

If you are planning a remap, experiencing poor throttle response, or dealing with recurring misfires, walnut blasting is often the best place to start.

Walnut Blasting For Direct Injection Engines

Unlike port injection, direct injection engines do not wash the intake valves with fuel. Oil vapour from the PCV system and combustion by products stick to the valves and harden over time. This restricts airflow and can lead to drivability issues.

Common Signs Of Carbon Build Up

  • Rough idle, especially on cold start
  • Hesitation or flat spots during acceleration
  • Reduced throttle response
  • Misfire fault codes that return after basic checks
  • Drop in fuel economy

What The Service Involves

  • Removal of the inlet manifold to access intake ports
  • Confirmation that valves are closed before cleaning
  • Cleaning each port using crushed walnut shell media
  • Continuous extraction of loosened carbon and media
  • Careful reassembly and final checks
  • Throttle adaptations and VANOS adaptations where applicable

Before Remapping Or Performance Work

Carbon build up can limit airflow and affect consistency during tuning. Cleaning the intake valves first helps ensure reliable results from remapping or hardware upgrades.
